Good machine! (2008-10-24)
This is a great little computer. It is similar in power and speed to my very large and heavy Dell laptop that is 4 years old. Although I wouldn't use it for intensive graphics stuff, I have Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements installed and they work fine. The WiFi radio seems very good. I see no reason to choose the Linux version... Windows is so much more standard in the business world. With a 2 Gigabyte memory upgrade, I suppose this machine could run Windows Vista someday, too, if that becomes necessary. Xp is fine with my 1 GB.
The keyboard is not really cramped, except for the well know right side "shift" key placement issue, which causes typos related to that key being small and so far over. I may look into "remapping" that key so that it exchanges functions with the right arrow cursor key, and relabel those two keys. I understand some people have already done that.
Plan on purchasing an external CD/DVD drive. I found a slim LG model at Best Buy for under $99 that powers off two usb ports just fine.
Battery life is good. I doubt that 7 hours is typical, but 5-6 hours is a lot better than other laptops. The charger is tiny, so it is easy to bring along. The screen is easy to read, although I wish it was natively 1024 x 768, instead of having to use a slightly compressed looking setting instead. The default 1024 x 600 is usually fine, but some programs are easier to use when the normal workspace is visible without scrolling up and down.
I was able to find a leather portfolio case at Staples that fits this machine just fine. You certainly don't need a typical large laptop case. It isn't super light, but is well built. I've had this Asus for a month now with no problems at all.
Eeee 1000H Netbook (2008-10-23)
This is a excellent little laptop. Performs like the $2,000 models. Light and easy to move around. Great for watching movies on the airplane. Comes loaded with XP Home and Works, Star Office which makes it nice. Has all the XP accessories. The wireless works really good, it's pick up is very strong.
Absolutely nothing to say bad about this. I am very glad to see someone raising the bar on high quality and affordable price. Keep up the good work!

Light, small, and powerful! (2008-10-23)
I've had the eee PC 1000H for about a week now and it is exactly as advertised (and exactly what I was looking for). First thing I did when I opened the box was upgraded the memory to 2 GB RAM. And it's done everything I've asked of it since: web browsing, Skype, OpenOffice, etc.
I traveled yesterday and my bag was much lighter than normal, I didn't feel that normal weight dragging me down. The Wi-Fi works fine, 802.11n is very speedy. I also bought a Verizon USB broadband card that worked super with it. And people love it when they see how small it is.
When I am work or home I attach an external monitor, keyboard, and wireless mouse. With the extended monitor setting in XP I can use both the notebook monitor and external monitor.
So far awesome!
Junk, Buy Something Else (2008-10-21)
The positive reviews on this thing clearly do not reflect hands on experience. As the other reviewer said the thing locks up after a few moments. I would add that the run time on the battery is nowhere near what is claimed. Mine went back almost immediately. Save yourself grief, pass on this one.
Giant Killer (2008-10-21)
This ASUS 1000H-A is amazing, fast & quiet. I bought it mostly for travel, but I've been using it for photo editing and other intense computing applications. This little thing performs just as fast as my 17" HP laptop. This is indeed a giant killer. The sound is awesome: I set it to headphone in the speakers setup and the speakers plays much louder than the default 2 speaker stereo setup. The LCD is brighter & crisper than both my Averatec and HP laptops. This is the ideal, perfect netbook: does everthing well! I installed the Delome Street Atlas USA With GPS software and it works better than any of those high priced GPS ONLY little screen gizmos that cost more than this Asus. Fast and accurate and small enough for the dash or console. Tip: The Delome Street Atlas USA is much better than microsoft street atlas (I have both). I also use it as a Photo Screen for my Canon DSLR camera. Works perfect with the Canon remote setup: 10" review instead of the tiny Camera LCD display. This Asus 1000H-A is the BOMB!
On the con side: jus' one - I hate where they put the right shift key, need some getting use to. Other than that, the key board, battery life, LCD, speakers are awesome. And the build quality and style: ELEGANT!
Well, you can tell, I highly recommend this netbook, top of its class.
If you can find the 1000H buy that instead of the 1000HA which lacks the bluetooth and wireless N but cost about $40-$50 dollars less, but If you don't need bluetooth or wireless N then get the 1000HA. Remember Asus invented the netbook, the others are copies! Nuff said!
