Okay for a Season (2008-10-07)
I've used this for quite a while now. Yes, it does keep the heat away from you, but it has warped quite badly and the rubber bumpers have been a problem all along. They don't stay stuck to the mat and at this point, I've lost two of them altogether. It's time for a new lap desk.
Outstanding product (2008-04-28)
Outstanding product. After trying other options, I find the Lapinator to be the best. I enthusiastically recommend it to friends, all of them pleased, and enjoy giving it as a gift. Once you own one, you never want to be without it.
Horrible for hot, bottom vented laptops! (2008-04-01)
The plastic becomes pliable when it's hot and basically sucks right up to the vents on the bottom of your computer, even with the little rubber feet in place. It really blocks the heat alright.. blocks it from escaping the computer at all!
Best Heat Reducing Lap Desk (2008-03-13)
I've tried the Lapinator, LaptopDesk 2.0 and the iLap and of the three it's not even close...the Lapinator is the BEST at keeping the heat off your legs.
The best part of the Lapinator is that you can use a laptop that gets super hot (my first generation black Macbook) for hours on end and not feel the heat on your legs. Is the Lapinator perfect? No. After extended use, you will be able to feel some heat coming out from the bottom of the Lapinator, but NOWHERE NEAR the amount of heat you would feel from the LaptopDesk and iLap.
For men, you might be better off getting the larger size Lapinator. From the looks of the measurements it seems that the larger Lapinator is wider allowing you spread your legs a bit while using it. The original Lapinator that I have requires you to keep your legs relatively close together for it to stay on your lap.
I never understood how insulating material would keep heat off your legs, but it does. The Thinsulate, I guess, absorbs the heat and keeps it in the material without disbursing it down to your legs. The problem with the LaptopDesk and iLap is that the materials not only absorb the heat, but it makes the heat escape down to your legs. The Lapinator does an EXCELLENT job of preventing the heat from going towards your legs.
I've heard people complain that the Lapinator will only work well for 1.5 hours, but I haven't found that to be true at all. I've used it for 3-5 hours on my lap and the heat does NOT get anywhere near the point of discomfort. You will feel the heat after a while, but again it is negligible.
The rubber stoppers that are included with the Lapinator raise the back of your laptop. I imagine this further helps keep the heat away from your legs. The Lapinator surface is slippery despite what they say, however, attaching the rubber stoppers virtually eliminates any sliding around.
