laptop help (2008-11-23)
I use this under my laptop all of the time. It puts it up for easy typing and visual. Love it.

Perfect lap desk (2008-07-18)
I wish I had bought one of these when I got my laptop! It keeps my laptop much cooler. I also got a Speck hard case, and that helps with the heat a little bit too. I have a 15" Macbook Pro, it can get too hot to touch. (smc Fan Control is a program that is probably keeping my computer from melting, download it if you have a Macbook!) I used to use a heavy piece of particle board as a lap desk, but it weighed a few pounds by itself and didn't block much heat. This, on the other hand, is less than a pound and is noticeably less weight on my lap. Unfolded, it is wide enough to use a mouse to one side, but bends in the middle if picked up from the sides - but then again, the description says for five pounds and under, but my computer is closer to 8 or 9.

Highly recommended, every laptop owner should have one of these!

Lapworks Ultralite a simple solution for a hot lap. (2008-05-03)
This product filled my need, it is very light, folds into a compact shape that fits into a computer case. It separates your lap from a hot computer reasonably well, a small pad place under the Ultralite improves comfort. The desk stand feature makes for more comfortable use of my laptop when I'm using it on a desk or table in a motel.

My laser mouse works very well on the provided surface. It is smooth shiny plastic and I thought it could be a problem but that was not the case.

The price seemed a little high but, since it is well built and does the job I still feel it is a good value.

Works fine (2008-01-14)
Kinda expected something bigger, heavier, and more sturdy but it works as designed. My wife stole mine so I need to buy another.

Solid, useful product (2007-10-10)
I've been using the Lapworks Laptop Desk Ultralite for a few weeks now. I have a Macbook Pro that gets ridiculously hot after a while but this product has really helped keep the heat off my lap. The laptop fan doesn't turn on nearly as soon as it did without using it. It's definitely more effective when used in the 'folded' position where there is a space between the computer and your lap. I was surprised to see how rugged this thing is for how light it is. It's even strong enough to use as a tray when I move the laptop. This is especially effective since it has very 'grippy' rubber pads that keep the laptop from sliding off too easily. I've used it to travel, putting it inside my laptop case with my laptop and it took up almost no additional space and added negligible weight. I'm totally satisfied with this purchase and I recommend it highly.

great idea, very thin cable (2008-11-18)
The photo of this product doesn't make this fact completely obvious, but the cable is about a fifth of the diameter of the standard Kensington security cables. I imagine it could be cut with a good pair of heavy duty wire cutters without too much difficulty, but it's probably good enough for the average thief.

Great buy (2008-09-19)
I bought this lock for my new MacBook that I ahve brought to college. Works well and doesn't damage the laptop like other locks I have read reviews about! The ability to retract is also convenient. Highly recommend.

The Elite laptop of all! (2008-11-23)
It is everything in a laptop i dream of and more. super fast, in all aspects of what I want to do, be it video editing, music editing, or writing a resume or just plain surfing,it is the best OS of all! My only peeve is that the hard drive is not a true 320GB hard drive (298?). Other than that, this laptop blows all of the rest out of the water. On Boot camp, a vista OS never had it so good with the ultra crisp graphics and and vivid color. That is the only thing that vista have over leopard, but leopard eats it up overall. Highly recommended if you want the best of both worlds in OSes, this is it and no other. That alone in my book makes this system worth every penny and once you go mac.......you never go back! My Imac pushed me away from PC's and there is no more need other than other particular things that windows do that OS X do not. Great investment, worth every dollar in my opinion. Parallels in an awesome hit as well! so many features, that will blow you away. Just a true blessing to have.

This computer is AMAZING (2008-11-21)
This is my first Apple laptop computer purchase and I am happy that I did. This thing is fast, quiet, great battery life and the screen is very bright. Also Amazon.com took great care when shipping the item to me.

Great Computer (2008-11-21)
I am a longtime PC user. In fact, I am a software engineer and work with a PC all day long. I still see the benefits of Windows computers, but after some exposure to Apple products...I have been wanting a Mac for a while now. After getting the base model new MacBook Pro (15.4" in, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive), I must say that it did not disappoint in the least bit.

You may here a bunch of negatives about the glossy screen, but I can truthfully say that it has not bothered me in the smallest way. If anything, I must say that this is the best screen on any laptop I have ever owned. Mac OS X is also very great. I have to admit, I am still finding my way, but for the most part things have been very easy. I really like the trackpad, and often find myself attempting some of the multi-touch gestures on my work Dell machine.

If I had to complain about anything it would actually probably be the keyboard...and this is a minor compliant. I actually find that I like the keyboard on my Dell laptop much better. However, in no way is the keyboard bad...it is just not as good. My only other complaint would be the price of the machine. Compared to the machines on the market, I still feel like this computer was worth it. The build quality and all the little extras are second to none. However, I still feel like the price is a bit high...yet still worth it.

Still a pretty decent computer for some, but a MAJOR downgrade from previous generation. No longer for creative Professionals (2008-11-20)
Good computer, but a major disappointment as it is downgraded in MANY ways from the previous model. No longer useful for Art, Photography, Video professionals. I have owned every upgrade to the Powerbook/Macbook Pro line for 9 years. EVERY single one! This is the first I had to return :(

First the good
-Very solid chassis, even more so than before.
-some of the benefits the previous generation had
-easier access to the hard drive for upgrade
-Improved Vid card
-Laptop that runs OSX, still the best operating system in use today!

The Bad (compared to the previous generation)
-Thinner by a hair, but wider and deeper yet a SMALLER battery? Very poor choice by Apple. End result = worse battery life in a larger laptop with the same size screen. (downgrade)

-Keyboard, some do like the new keyboard, I do not. It is simply not as good as the one it replaces. (Downgrade)

-Screen screen screen, the glossy screens are absolute garbage if you want proper color rendition or if you want to use it anywhere that you do not have complete control of where the lights are. Coffee shop? Good luck. Library? I don't think so! I am a professional photographer and I had to return the new Macbook Pro mainly because the glossy screen (no option for Matte anymore) has horrible color reproduction. (downgrade)

-New Trackpad. Apple has lost their way with the Macbook Pro. The Pro part used to mean "for professionals" this is definitely not the case anymore. No button on the trackpad "neato" until you try to edit a photo. Try applying a brush while holding the whole trackpad down! Same can be said of many programs. Basically this gimmick has many serious repercussions on real world use. (Downgrade)

-Removed the Firewire 400 port. Huh? Still WIDELY used by Pro's. A single Firewire 800 port just won't cut it. (Downgrade)

-Very sad to see such a great tool fall into consumer trends. Apple will slowly begin to lose it's ability to charge a premium for this product. Much of the premium was based on the idea that professionals use it. I genuinely think this will be a thing of the past in a VERY short time if Apple does not do something to fix this product.

Sorry Apple, but you missed the mark BIG time on this one.

The previous generation is still available as I write this and at GREAT prices. I would grab the absolute best of that generation, as it may be the last great model.

Michael Manna from T4 Show (2008-11-17)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3RM83V7DHZIBQ My name is Michael Manna and I host the T4 Show. It's a site that covers all technology news as well as performing podcasts and videos. I just received my MacBook Pro today and shot a quick tour. I haven't had a chance to fully review it yet, but I want to make a comment about Amazon Prime. It is the BEST. I ordered the MBP with 1 day shipping for $3.99 on Saturday, assuming it would be delivered on Tuesday. It arrived Monday before 10am. This is not the first time that has happened. I am a huge proponent of Amazon Prime, especially for Christmas shopping. Now I can play with my new MacBook Pro and not get bumped and shoved at the malls. Prime is the best!

Awsome!!!! (2008-11-10)
I bought this Laptop last week from Best Buy ($1,299). It had more Ram and more Memory than almost every computer I looked at. It has a 17" Monitor. It's sleek (like where the power button and a/c plug are located) and look amazing. It's 1080P and has a Blue Ray Player and Writer (25 times the space of a DVD). It has an HDMI out! I connected it to my 72" DLP yesterday and within seconds I saw my laptop image on my TV (Amazing!!). The quality of the LCD Screen is fantastic. It has a dual processor which even helped my internet speed. I am 6'5" and have large hands. The keyboard is set up perfectly for me. I would definitely recommend this computer to anyone.

- You know after you buy something you question your purchase for the next couple of days... I am totally satisfied with this computer and would make the purchase again without a second thought!

Amazon.com Product Description
With the MacBook Air, Apple has created the world's thinnest laptop--measuring an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point (and 0.76 inches thick overall). Apple brings its vaunted multi-touch technology, found on the iPhone, to its laptops with the MacBook Air, enabling you to pinch, swipe, or rotate to zoom in on text, advance through a photo album, or adjust an image via the oversized trackpad. And the MacBook Air embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress with its aluminum enclosure, a material highly desired by recyclers; Apple's first mercury-free LCD display with arsenic-free glass; and brominated flame retardant-free material for the majority of circuit boards as well as PVC-free internal cables.

The MacBook Air includes a vibrant 13.3-inch LED-backlit display and a full-sized keyboard.
Despite the its slender shell, the MacBook Air doesn't skimp on the specifications. It includes a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, full-size and backlit keyboard, and a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing. The MacBook Air is powered by a custom-built 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved multitasking performance. And it features the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor, which delivers outstanding 3D game play with up to five times faster graphics performance than the previous generation. Other features include 2 GB of RAM, a 120 GB hard disk drive, Wi-Fi connectivity via 802.11a/b/g/n standards, Mini DisplayPort video output (for DVI and VGA connections), and up to a 4.5-hour battery life.

It comes pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which adds over 300 new features including easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter, and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser. It also comes with the iLife '08 suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.

Design
The thinness of MacBook Air is impressive, but even more impressive is that fact that there's a full-size notebook encased in the 0.16 to 0.76 inch of sleek, sturdy anodized aluminum. This svelte, 3-pound laptop has a vibrant, energy efficient 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display, and its spacious trackpad offers multi-touch gesture support for pinch, rotate and swipe--making it more intuitive than ever to browse and rotate photos or zoom into web pages in Safari. It also features a full-size keyboard that's backlit, making it ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls. It includes a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

Amazingly thin at just 0.16 inches at its thinnest and 0.76 inches at its thickest point, the MacBook Air weighs just 3 pounds.

One of Apple's most celebrated innovations is the MagSafe power adapter connector, which offers a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So, if you happen to trip over a power cord, you won't send the MacBook Air flying off a table or desk--the cord simply disconnects, without damage to either the cord or the system.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Custom-built to fit within the compact dimensions of the laptop, the MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a super-fast 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an enormous 6 MB of Smart Cache, an L2 cache that can be shared between the cores as needed. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts. And with 4MB of shared L2 cache, the MacBook Air is a multi-tasking monster. With such substantial L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Video Processing & Output
Whether you're working on a Keynote presentation or watching a movie before you catch a flight, every document, video, and photo on your MacBook Air will look sharp on the glossy 13.3-inch widescreen display. With the new NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor, the MacBook Air changes the game and just about everything you do with it. The 9400M provides up to an amazing 4x performance boost over the original MacBook Air. Photos appear in iPhoto quickly, transitions in Keynote are seamless, games play more smoothly, and movie and video playback is better than ever before. The 9400M graphics processor shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory.

The MacBook Air now includes a next generation Mini DisplayPort, which delivers a pure digital signal that can drive up to a 30-inch widescreen display. The Mini DisplayPort is ultra-compact at just 10 percent the size of a full DVI connector, and is compatible with Apple's 24-inch Cinema Display. Adapters are also available for using VGA, DVI/HDMI and Dual-Link DVI displays

Hard Drive and Memory
For storage, this MacBook Air comes with a 120 GB Parallel ATA hard disk drive (4200 RPM). The 2 GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) has an industry-leading 1066 MHz speed, and it maximizes the capacity for this laptop.

Optical Drive
Because of the amazingly thin design of the MacBook Air, an optical (DVD/CD) drive was not included. To install software from a disc, you can wirelessly use or "borrow" optical drives on remote PCs or Macs using the Remote Disk feature. This allows you full access to an optical drive without having to haul one around. If you want to have an optical drive for burning CDs and DVDs, you can purchase the optional MacBook Air SuperDrive (sold separately). This multi-format CD/DVD read/write drive is powered by the MacBook Air's USB port, eliminating the need to carry a separate power adapter.

Networking
The MacBook Air doesn't include wired Ethernet networking, and instead relies solely on Wi-Fi to connect to your home network as well as wireless hotspots. The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the optional AirPort Extreme base station as well as Apple's Time Capsule Wi-Fi base station/hard drive--both of which include 802.11n capabilities. If you don't have access to a wireless network, you can use an optional USB Ethernet Adapter (sold separately)

Use the built-in Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the display bezel is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Other Features

  • Mini DisplayPort compatible with DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI connectors (all optional)
  • Analog audio output/headphone out (minijack)
  • Built-in mono speaker and omnidirectional microphone
  • Integrated 37-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery provides up to 5 hours of battery life
  • Built-in full-size keyboard with 78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys, 4 arrow keys (inverted "T" arrangement), and embedded numeric keypad
  • Supported resolutions: 1280 by 800 (native), 1152 by 720, 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, 800 by 500, 720 by 480, and 640 by 480 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio; 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio

Environtmental Considerations
The entire new MacBook family meets stringent Energy Star 4.0, EPEAT Gold and RoHS environmental standards, and leads the industry in the elimination of toxic chemicals by containing no brominated flame retardants, using only PVC-free internal cables and components, and using energy efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass.

Just right (2008-11-20)
Bought this as a light, shockproof Mac to run typical Mac software (Aperture, CS3, Office, Sente etc.) to supplement iMac. Willing to accept lesser performance for portable productivity. System is silent (fans are rarely on), SSD seems very fast compared with notebook-class HDD's (for example editing video on EyeTV). Screen very readable. Truly just the right balance of capabilities for this kind of application. Macbook Pro would have been faster but not so much as to make a meaningful difference. Effortless portability and now (in its 2nd generation) more than sufficient speed particularly with the SSD is the reason to get this. Highly recommended.
